"Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today."
-Malcolm X
Throughout this semester, I learned many essential things that will better improve my success in future English courses that I will be taking. For example, I really learned that I need to provide a more in depth analysis when connecting my thoughts to the text that I am reading, by providing more direct information from the novel. I find that supporting my answers with evidence was my biggest weak spot this semester. Although I made sure to incorporate specific examples from the text into my writing, I was often insufficient when it came to providing a thorough analysis connecting my thoughts back to the text.
Ultimately, the greatest impact this course had on me was when connecting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to pieces we had read, and connecting it to real life situations that occur in this world everyday. Some of the events that were discussed within this unit were unfathomable, and I believe, essential topics that ALL students should be made aware of. It is sad to think that many students in the class were not even aware of the genocide that occurred in Rwanda only 20 years ago. And it is through the knowledge of such events that students gain the ability to construct a deeper view on politics, cultures around the world, and are able to realize why such rights are set forth to protect them.
The skills that were taught throughout this semester were valuable, and skills that I will be resorting to throughout the rest of my school career. The topics discussed were relevant which intrigued students more so, even for the Shakespeare and novel study of Wuthering Heights, which may not be relevant to today's society, but both contain characters and plots that can be related to in some way even to this day.
