Background Information
Saloth Sar (Pol Pot's original birth name) was born on May 19, 1928 in Cambodia, to a father who had extremely strong political connections to the Cambodian capital's royal court of Phnom Penh. Although given the birth name Saloth Sar, Pot continued to deny that as his birth name his entire life in hopes of further protecting his family. Later in life, Pol enrolled himself in technical schooling, later obtaining a government scholarship to study electrical technology in Paris, France. It was in Paris that he began to involve himself deepy in the Communist Party. "Look at me now, am I savage person? My conscience is clear." |
The Return to Cambodia
Pot returned to Cambodia in 1953 becoming a part of the first Cambodia Communist Party, the Khmer People's Revolutionary Party (KPRP), more commonly known as the "Khmer Rouge." In 1963, guerilla bases were set up by the Khmer Rouge througout remote regions in the country to fight the government of Prince Sihanouk, which was later overthrown and a civil war broke out within Vietnam. It was due to this destabilization of economy and military that Pol Pot was voted into power through popularity. Impact In the end, nothing but disaster was left by Pol Pot. Throughout his time of power he extinguished all city life, religion, embassies, medical assistance, foreign/economic assistance, medical attention, education, and forbid any forms of money to name a few. He forced millions into slavery, living in shared housing of 15 or more families at a time. "Killing Fields" were the most common name for the farms that the slaves worked on, due to the fact that hundreds died each day due to malnutrition, overwork, and disease, living on rations as small as one tin of rice every 2 days per person. In 1997 Pol Pot was arrested and sentenced to life under house arrest. He later died in 1998, but rumors to this day still claim that he was poisoned or committed suicide.
